Although there is much talk about sustainability, science-based facts show that the world is not on track to
achieve the global sustainability goals by 2030. In Switzerland, overexploitation of ecological resources and
social inequalities of opportunity dominate. The state, civil society and companies are called upon to make
their contribution to a safe and just life within the donut economy. This Master's thesis aims to find out which
incentives support producing SME+ in sustainable business management in order to profitably implement
ecological and social measures in the long term. The result is a four-step solution approach for SME+. The
current situation requires responsible, fast and effective actions from all actors.
weit verbreitetes System, beigezogen.
In recent years, the importance of mobile robots has grown rapidly. With this new type of robot, new
development requirements arise. One tool that has gained acceptance in software development is the
Robot Operating System (ROS). Initially developed by and for universities, ROS is gradually being
used increasingly in industrial applications. However, this also brings new challenges. The first
version of ROS, ROS 1, was completely revised in order to meet the demands. The goal of this new
version is to be able to develop reliable and deterministic applications that can also be used in
safety-critical applications, for example.
This master thesis aims to demonstrate and classify the performance and the limitations of ROS 2 for
real-time applications through tests on two different test setups. For this purpose, a programmable
logic controller (PLC), a widely used industrial system, is used for comparison.
Based on the results of the experiments, it can be shown that the developer strongly influences the
behaviour concerning time specifications. This starts with setting up the operating system and
continues with various setting options in the application's source code to be developed. Likewise,
integrating external hardware (e.g. sensors) must be given great attention.
At the current stage of the development of ROS 2, the tool is suitable for applications with soft realtime
constraints. These are applications where a set time constraint on the system may be exceeded
up to a certain degree or a certain number of times. For applications with hard real-time constraints,
where the time requirements must always be met, other systems such as PLCs are preferable.
However, this may change in the future with the ongoing development of ROS 2.
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) is a core building block for voice assistants. ASR has performed
strongly in several languages, among them English and German. However, it performs poorly on lowresource
languages due to a lack of sizable datasets. Poor performance limits acceptance in countries
such as Switzerland because of its unique variants of German. In this work, we explore the possibility
of improving Swiss German speech recognition using unsupervised learning.
The base of our work is wav2vec-Unsupervised. Speech representations are created from audio files
using a wav2vec2 model. We trained a Generative Adversarial Network on these representations and
unpaired phonemized text. The generator learns transcribing audio, and the discriminator has to
distinguish data from our text corpus and data produced by the generator. First, we reproduced the
Standard German results published. Then, we performed experiments on Swiss German data.
We report a Phoneme Error Rate (PER) of 17.5% for Standard German and successfully reproduced
the published results on a phoneme level. After various attempts to optimize the training stability of
the model, our best Swiss German approach achieved a PER of 86.5% using ten hours of audio data.
Finally, we proposed suggestions on how our results could be further improved in future works.
vertikal einwirkende Linienlasten bestehen. Allen Lastfällen ist ausserdem eine horizontale Drucknormalkraft
aufgezwungen.
Single-cell box girders are usually exposed to a combination of normal and shear forces, as well as bending
and torsional moments, depending on the load and its position. The three-dimensional load-bearing behavior
due to a combined load of bending and torsion has not been comprehensively clarified. A nonlinear finite
element analysis (nlFE) as well as a linear finite element analysis (FE) are used to analyze the load-bearing
behavior of single-cell box girders and to understand the three-dimensional interaction of bending and
torsion.
In the second chapter, basic assumptions for the finite element analysis are made. Besides the choice of
material relations, the geometry of the single-cell box girder is defined. Furthermore, the selected
reinforcement layout is specified. The nonlinear finite element analysis (nlFE) are based on a "User Defined
Material" developed by Prof. Dr. Karel Thoma.
In the third chapter, the observations from the nonlinear finite element analysis (nlFE) and the linear finite
element analysis (FE analysis) are presented based on six different load cases. Three of the load cases consist
of vertically applied single loads and three of vertically applied distributed loads. In addition, a horizontal
pressure normal force is applied to all load cases. The load case bending with normal force due to
symmetrical load consists of a load symmetrical to the axis of the beam. Thus, no torsional stress results on
the beam model. A vertically applied load that is symmetrical to the axis of the beam, but with an opposite
direction of force, defines the load case torsion with normal force due to antisymmetric load. As a result, no
longitudinal bending moments and no shear forces arise. The load case bending, torsion and normal force due
to one-sided loading is characterized by the fact that only one of the two webs will be loaded vertically. This
load position causes a combined stress from bending and torsion.
In the fourth chapter, the observations from the different finite element analysis types as well as from the six
different load cases are linked and theories on the load-bearing behavior are derived from them. Furthermore,
design principles for reinforcement are discussed for the observed load-bearing behavior. At last, an
interaction relation is compared with a load case from nonlinear finite element analysis.
To conclude, the fifth chapter summarizes the knowledge gained and presents conclusions for the loadbearing
behavior of single-cell box girders under bending and torsion. An overview for further investigations
completes this master thesis.

Abstract Deutsch
As part of the project "Neuer Campus Horw", an investigation is being carried out into how the
thermal peak loads of the buildings on the new campus can be covered. The concept is to connect
the campus to the lake water network and thus supplying it with thermal energy. In summer, the
lake water can be used directly for cooling, in winter it serves as a source for the heat pump. As a
thermal peak load coverage, a storage solution is sought so that the campus is independent of fossil
fuels and also of other additional energy sources.
Based on the competition documents of the project "Gravity" a building model is created, which is
used for a thermal simulation of the campus. Three climate scenarios are used as climate data; a
current scenario based on data from the recent past and two future scenarios for the period around
the year 2060. One of these future scenarios represents a year in which climate protection is
consistently implemented and CO2-emissions are constantly reduced. The other future scenario
represents a year in which no climate protection measures are implemented and annual CO2
emissions steadily increase. The results show that with current climate data there is a high heating
demand and a medium cooling demand. In the future, the heating demand will decrease and the
cooling demand will increase. The intensity of this trend depends on the extent to which climate
protection measures are implemented globally from the present time.
These results are stored in a model that simulates and optimizes the energy flows of the system. The
goal of this simulation is to determine the necessary energy content of the storage system for
thermal peak load coverage as a function of the generated thermal power. The energetic
consideration shows, that the normal climate scenario in the heating case is decisive for the
determination of the storage size, in the cooling case it is the future scenario without climate
protection measures. Furthermore, from a heat pump capacity of 150 kW only one storage tank is
necessary, since there is no overlap between the heating and cooling operation.
In order to determine the volumetric size and the geometry of such a storage tank, a storage
simulation is carried out. For this purpose, the necessary volume of a sensible water storage is
determined as a function of the generated thermal power and the storage height. A storage tank with
a maximum height of 2.5 m and a maximum volume of 5'000 m³ could be accommodated in the
already existing bunker below the canteen. Thus, no additional volume would have to be created for
the storage tank. The storage simulation shows that a pure water storage tank with a volume of
about 1'675 m³ in combination with a heat pump capacity of 300 kW and a storage height of 2.5 m
ideally covers the heating as well as the cooling case. With the same height and a heat pump
capacity of 250 kW, a 4’400 m³ storage tank would be required for the decisive heating case. This
volume could be reduced by integrating a phase change material, which has its melting point at
approx. 35 °C. A first mathematical estimation shows that a storage tank with a volume of about
2'400 m³ and a storage height of 2.5 m in combination with a heat pump of 250 kW is suitable for
the heating and cooling case. Accordingly, there would be two different solutions how to integrate a
storage tank into the bunker.
The decision on which climate scenarios the storage tank should be designed for is still open. In
addition, a system extension with the integration of the domestic hot water is an option to further
increase the energy efficiency of this system.
Heliotis develops and commercializes 3D measurement systems based on white light interferometry. Due to
the high accuracy and the short cycle time these measurement systems are used in production lines for quality
control. In existing machine vision systems the topology information is transferred to and evaluated on a
vision computer which communicates the inspection outcome to a higher level control unit. This thesis
expands the measurement system to a smart camera. A framework for integration of inspection tasks is
evaluated. A script based solution is selected and realized using the HALCON image processing library. Two
interfaces for communication with a higher level control unit are implemented. For simple signalling digital
IOs are used whereas numerical results are transmitted over EtherCAT. A demonstrator was built and the
smart camera’s performance is benchmarked vs. a conventional computer based solution.
The present master thesis examines a variety of combinations of practices, techniques, and methods
of portfolio management to measure and to demonstrate the total value of individual and aggregated
digitization projects as well as to reduce the inherent risk. The goal of this master thesis is to
develop a process and governance mechanism for the cost / benefit evaluation of Pilatus Aircraft
Limited digitization projects. The procedure will allow Pilatus Aircraft Limited to support their decision-
making process for a systematic prioritization and governance of projects as well as optimization
of resource planning. The assessment procedure is linked to the corporate strategy, the total benefit
of the project portfolio is maximized, and the achievement of a balanced portfolio and the right constellation
of projects are considered.
Low-tech buildings are characterized by their simple, but very durable and resource-saving principle. At the
same time, the use of technology in low-tech buildings is reduced to a minimum.
In addition to the principles, low-tech buildings are also characterized by a very low overall energy
consumption.
From the previous preliminary work in the master's program (specialization module 1 and specialization
module 2), knowledge from the topic of standardization of occupancy with a focus on international buildings
in warm climate regions and the analysis of heat flows in individual components could be taken and
incorporated as input into this master's thesis. With the knowledge gained from the two preliminary works,
the effectiveness of the principles in warm climate regions worldwide will be determined and investigated as
a final step. Four locations in different climatic regions are predefined for this purpose. In order to include the
topic "future", the principles are analyzed not only with the current climate, but also with the climate
scenarios (RCP scenarios) in the future.
The climate was analyzed in four main characteristics. The outdoor temperature, humidity, global radiation
and cloud cover. The humidity and global radiation remain similar to the current climate even with the
climate projections (RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios). Outdoor temperatures will change more steeply or more
sharply depending on location. Especially in warm climate regions, climate change will be defined in a
particularly pronounced way. The cloudiness will change like the outside temperature depending on the
location.
The aim of this master thesis is to define and extend the basics for buildings in warm climate regions by
means of a catalog for simple building types (Simple House, Apartment and Office).
With the results from the numerous building simulations (four climate locations, three building types, two
RCP scenarios, two observation periods, three changeable parameters on the building structure) it is difficult
to make general statements about the potential of building types regarding the changeable parameters. In
chapter 4, a potential catalog was created with the corresponding data from the results.
This paper describes the market potential and the attractiveness of a market entry of hydrogen in road
transport. An analogy to the NGV market, as well as analyses for stakeholders, PESTE, industry structure,
SWOT and sensitivity were created and "System Thinking" was applied. The barriers to hydrogen mobility
are: (a) the creation of infrastructure, (b) the cost of hydrogen vehicles and (c) consumer acceptance. The
most important drivers of hydrogen mobility are climate policy measures, energy security and
entrepreneurship. The entry barriers to hydrogen mobility are high. Competition is low in the early market
development phase. Compared to diesel trucks, FC trucks offer attractive advantages, especially in urban
operation. Infrastructure, competitiveness and customer acceptance are the most important critical success
factors.
Greifer montierten inertiale Messeinheit (IMU).
The automation industry is one of the quickest developing branches of engineering that propose
technological innovative solutions. In practice there is a growing need for implants to work
faster, more reliable and to reduce the time for programming machines, such as robot arms.
Two main methods are adopted for programming industrial robots:
The first one is online programming, also known as “Teaching”. The online programming
constitutes of an operator that moves the robot using a remote to the desired position and saves
it, creating a trajectory. This method takes a lot of time and trained operator is required to both
move and know the programming language of the robot.
The second method is called offline programming. In this case the movement program is
created without the need to manipulate the robot. In fact the program will be written and tested
on a PC that simulates the cell conditions before being sent to the actual robot cell. This method
can be time saving, but it requires a high level of programming knowledge, as well as deep
knowledge of the dedicated robotic suite. Moreover working without the physical cell could
lead to a higher difficulty into programming, because the level of abstraction is certainly higher.
Both methods presents advantages and disadvantages, but what if there could be a method even
quicker, that doesn't require programming knowledge and that allows the operator to work with
direct contact on the robot? This project comes from a vision: a gripper detached from the robot, that could be handled by
the movement of an operator hand. The operator will move the gripper to perform a motion operation (as picking and placing an object) and send directly the position coordinates to the
robot, so that it will be able to repeat the movement performed by the operator's hand. This
method tears down the programming's difficulty of the robot, because the only knowledge
required is something as natural as a hand movement, while drastically reducing the
programming time.
This project consists of a feasibility analysis of such system trough the use of an Inertial
Measurement Unit (IMU) mounted on the gripper. The evaluation made helped to underline not
only the precision of the position tracking with a standalone IMU system, but to expose also its
limitations.
The IMU was tested in three different conditions:
Movement on the Tactile Coordinates Measurement Machine
Movements on the robot
Hand movements
The results have shown that a standalone IMU system for position tracking cannot be used for
an enough-precise tracking of hand movements due to the drift coming from the double
integration of the acceleration data. Therefore the system was enhanced by adding a camera and
an Apriltags detection system as an external referencing system. A demonstrator robotic cell
was built to show the potential of the combined IMU / AprilTags position tracking, which
positioning precision reached lies in the millimeter range.
versetzt.
This research focuses on the development of an envelope protection for an autonomous agricultural
robot. More specifically, it focuses on creating a speed control that responds to the main challenges
and dangers such a robot could face during an off-road operation: lack of power, slippage, side/back
tipping, and terrain roughness.
With the aid of existing research that defines the optimum velocity for off-road vehicles and the use
of limiting factors based on the environmental conditions, a method for the envelope protection is
proposed.
The idea is that the set speed of the machine will be an optimum velocity – based on the slippage
due to the terrain type – minus the maximum value amongst several velocity-limiting factors. The
factors are based on the available power, roll angle, pitch angle, and terrain roughness that vibrates
the robot.
