A hybrid accumulator combines high energy density accumulators with supercapacitors that can provide very
high amounts of power for a short period of time. To connect these two energy storages to the drivetrain, a
DC/DC converter is needed to adapt the voltages. In this thesis a prototype of a dual input synchronous
bidirectional boost converter for use in a hybrid accumulator in a formula student electric race car is
assembled and commissioned. The prototype which uses silicon-carbide semiconductors and has a maximum
power of 40 kW is commissioned in a laboratory environment. The evaluation of optimal parameters for the
design of the converter is determined using a multi-objective optimization implemented in Matlab and
Simulink. For the control of the converter a state space representation is determined and compared to a circuit
simulation using PLECS.
This paper presents the implementation of an assessment method for the comparison of energy management
systems for self-consumption optimization (EMS). It is the last of three parts in which this assessment
method was developed.
An EMS optimizes self-consumption by switching on consumers when the PV system produces more energy
than the building consumes or switches them off when energy has to be purchased from the network operator.
The EMS market in Switzerland is still young and constantly changing. That makes it difficult to keep track
of things. This evaluation procedure allows testing of various EMS under the same and reproducible
conditions. This simplifies the selection of the most suited EMS for the PV system.
The assessment method is limited to EMS, which are intended for use in single-family homes. The method
checks the self-consumption share and degree of self-sufficiency. Furthermore, it calculates the energy costs.
This thesis describes the consumer models and PV production theoretically. In a later step these models are
implemented in a simulation using the software Simulink. The EMS is built into the test setup as «hardware
in the loop».
In the implementation of the interfaces S0 and UDP, problems occurred which could not be solved before the
deadline.
The reference process (simulation without EMS) could be used to test the assessment method. Furthermore,
all models could be implemented.
The result suggests that this assessment method works, and the EMS can be tested and assessed using this
method.
vertikal einwirkende Linienlasten bestehen. Allen Lastfällen ist ausserdem eine horizontale Drucknormalkraft
aufgezwungen.
Single-cell box girders are usually exposed to a combination of normal and shear forces, as well as bending
and torsional moments, depending on the load and its position. The three-dimensional load-bearing behavior
due to a combined load of bending and torsion has not been comprehensively clarified. A nonlinear finite
element analysis (nlFE) as well as a linear finite element analysis (FE) are used to analyze the load-bearing
behavior of single-cell box girders and to understand the three-dimensional interaction of bending and
torsion.
In the second chapter, basic assumptions for the finite element analysis are made. Besides the choice of
material relations, the geometry of the single-cell box girder is defined. Furthermore, the selected
reinforcement layout is specified. The nonlinear finite element analysis (nlFE) are based on a "User Defined
Material" developed by Prof. Dr. Karel Thoma.
In the third chapter, the observations from the nonlinear finite element analysis (nlFE) and the linear finite
element analysis (FE analysis) are presented based on six different load cases. Three of the load cases consist
of vertically applied single loads and three of vertically applied distributed loads. In addition, a horizontal
pressure normal force is applied to all load cases. The load case bending with normal force due to
symmetrical load consists of a load symmetrical to the axis of the beam. Thus, no torsional stress results on
the beam model. A vertically applied load that is symmetrical to the axis of the beam, but with an opposite
direction of force, defines the load case torsion with normal force due to antisymmetric load. As a result, no
longitudinal bending moments and no shear forces arise. The load case bending, torsion and normal force due
to one-sided loading is characterized by the fact that only one of the two webs will be loaded vertically. This
load position causes a combined stress from bending and torsion.
In the fourth chapter, the observations from the different finite element analysis types as well as from the six
different load cases are linked and theories on the load-bearing behavior are derived from them. Furthermore,
design principles for reinforcement are discussed for the observed load-bearing behavior. At last, an
interaction relation is compared with a load case from nonlinear finite element analysis.
To conclude, the fifth chapter summarizes the knowledge gained and presents conclusions for the loadbearing
behavior of single-cell box girders under bending and torsion. An overview for further investigations
completes this master thesis.
Data-driven modelling has gained momentum in science and engineering and computational fluid dynamics
is an exemplary field to explore this approach. Central to this thesis is the specific framework of Field
Inversion and Machine Learning (FIML) developed by Parish and Duraisamy [1], Duraisamy et al. [2, 3] and
Singh et al. [4] to improve existing RANS turbulence models using measurement or high-fidelity simulation
data.
Key of the paradigm is the field inversion, where an objective function is formulated in terms of the
difference between the base model and the truth model. This thesis uses a formulation with Tikhonov
regularization. The objective function is then iteratively minimized using an optimization algorithm with a
discrete adjoint method to extract the spatial discrepancy of the model. A machine learning algorithm is
employed to learn the relationship between this discrepancy field and selected features of the base model.
The machine learning model is linked to the base model, capable of conducting simulations resembling the
truth model.
The goal of this thesis is to apply the proposed FIML framework within the pressure-coupled solver
coupledNumerics [5]. The proof of concept aims to validate the FIML procedure: The Spalart-Allmaras
turbulence model (base model) is optimized to equal the Spalart-Allmaras rotation and curvature correction
model (truth model) using a U-turn pipe as geometry. In a second step, the generalization capabilities of the
FIML procedure are verified by training and predicting on varying Reynolds numbers and pipe geometries. In
a final step, the FIML paradigm is applied to an adverse pressure gradient case, using the 2-dimensional wall
mounted hump geometry and sparse experimental values only as truth model.
The proof of concept shows that the FIML paradigm is capable of inferring the discrepancy field via an
inverse problem using full-field data and that machine learning tools are able to recreate this field for new
simulations. The random forest algorithm showed more consistent results with less effort than a simple neural
network implementation. The accuracy of the machine learning model depends on many factors such as the
selected hyperparameters and features but can never perfectly reproduce the field inversion results,
diminishing therefore the overall accuracy of FIML. The generalization test proofs that the paradigm is
capable of being applied to different flows and geometries, as long as they are similar. Using the friction
coefficient as sparse data to inform the objective function for the hump, it is found that difficulties arise to
obtain a result which neither under- nor overfits the truth model data during the field inversion.
This master's thesis deals with the numerical computation of stresses in overhead line conductors. Mainly the
local stresses in the contacts between the crossing wires of the two outermost layers are of interest. Two finite
element modeling approaches are developed and examined. On the one hand beam-and-solid hybrid
modelling is investigated, on the other hand the beam-to-solid submodelling technique is examined. Starting
with models of a single-layered conductor, the models are gradually expanded. It turns out that beam-andsolid
hybrid modelling is not applicable because the computation times are too high. With the developed
beam-to-solid-to-solid submodelling approach, contact results that are simulated with a corresponding solid
finite element model can be reproduced with a deviation of less than twelve percent for single-, two- and
four-layered overhead line conductors.
Rapid urbanization and the increasing environmental footprint of urban areas have resulted in recognising the
importance of cities in achieving environmental targets. Certification schemes, such as the Energiestadt label,
start becoming more common and provide guidance for local level action. Energiestadt specifically, certifies
cities and municipalities which commit to a sustainable energy and climate policy. By now, the label is wellestablished
and it currently counts more than 460 certified cities in Switzerland. The thesis investigates the
overall structure of Energiestadt label and critically analyses the effectiveness of its indicators by assessing
three areas: the design of the indicators’ system and how this compares to other similar labels; the alignment
of the indicators with the national strategy; and the performance of a municipality against certain
Energiestadt indicators. The results suggest that the label’s indicators are well-aligned with the direction of
the national energy strategy. However, improvements can be made with respect to the number of qualitative
indicators, as well as the way the label assesses municipalities which are more advanced with regard to their
energy and climate policy.

multikriteriellen Entscheidungsanalyse (MCDA) bewertet.
The power supply is a critical infrastructure and the substations are an important part of it.
They are the interface between the different grid levels to which the end users are connected.
This paper examines whether and under what conditions the use of modular substation
components makes sense.
The analysis is based on the SBB traction power grid with over 80 substations. The validity of
all interim results is individually verified in the transmission grid of Swissgrid and in the
distribution grid of Axpo. This enables the results to be generalised and possible differences
between the grids to be highlighted.
In the first part of the paper, the basics of power supply, the structure and modularisation of
substations are discussed. Thereafter, the framework conditions are examined and the cases to
be evaluated and criteria are defined. These are weighted by experts within the framework of
an Analytic Hierarchy Process and evaluated in a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA).
Based on the evaluation and its sensitivities, guidelines for the use of modular substations are
developed.
It has been shown that the use of a substation as a fixed component is worthwhile, especially
due to cost reductions and an increase in security of supply. It can be used in any combination
in the traction power and distribution grid, but not for AIS-based systems in the transmission
grid due to the voltage. The use as a temporary solution during construction work in the substation is particularly
worthwhile because of the increase in security of supply. It only makes sense to use them with
MTS or GIS systems in the traction power and transmission grid, but not in the distribution
grid. Furthermore, the modules cannot be combined at will as a temporary solution and a
minimum size of the portfolio is required for acceptable economic efficiency.
The basis for a strategic decision on the use of modular substations could be clearly presented.
In the next step it is recommended to pilot modular substations: first in use as a temporary
measure and then as a fixed component of a substation. This will allow the evaluations to be
validated, which should then again be shared among the grid operators.

Relaxation-Time (MRT) Modellen.
Many industrial fluid problems involve more than one fluid and are called multiphase problems,
when the fluid consists of more than one phase or a change phase occurs. Multicomponent
flow problems occur, if the fluid is a mixture of multiple fluids with individual properties. Of
course, a combination of both cases is also possible. In this work, a multicomponent model is
developed to simulate immiscible flow problems as they are found for example in spray
applications. The model is based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) which has its root in
the molecular kinetic and was first published in 1940 by Stanislaw Ulam and John von
Neumann. Compared to conventional computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which solve the
macroscopic governing equations directly. The LBM uses the Boltzmann equation and the
solution can be used to find the macroscopic field variables such as velocity, density and
pressure. The LBM has gained a lot of popularity in the last two decades and is still a very
active research field. As a result, many multiphase and or multicomponent models exist and
fight for supremacy.
The present work is based on the model first published by Rothmann-Keller (RK) in 1988. The
RK model, also called the Color-Gradient (CG), was improved over the last few years and has
crucial advantages, like a sharp interface between the components, the control of surface
tension by single parameter and multiple approaches to handle simulations with variable
density ratios. It is well known in the LB community that simulations tend to become unstable
as soon as the flow is turbulent. The simplest approach is to refine the grid resolution, however
in most cases this is not feasible due to the limitation of computational resources. Thus socalled
Multi-Time-Relaxation (MRT) schemes are developed to allow the relaxation of each
individual moment at its appropriate rate. These countermeasures make the LB simulation
stable without refining the grid resolution. Unfortunately, the problem is often to find suitable
relaxation rates, since they depend on the problem at hand. The model developed by Karlin,
Bösch and Chikatamarla (KBC) circumvents this issue, and is able to find suitable parameters
during the simulation and adjust them if needed.
The core of this work is to combine RK and KBC model, as this has not been investigated
previously. The target is to achieve a model which does not depend on prior knowledge and is
easy to use for different cases. The model was tested by multiple simulations like the static
droplet test or the Rayleigh-Taylor instability test. Further, first jet break-up simulations were
carried out and the evolution of the interface was compared against experimental data
available in the literature. It turned out, that this model is stable for very low viscosity and can
capture tiny droplets, with a diameter of a few nodes. Unfortunately, the model is unstable for
density ratios greater than 10 and when the velocity grows. Further, research is needed to
enhance the stability for LB simulations at high density ratios.
Although there is much talk about sustainability, science-based facts show that the world is not on track to
achieve the global sustainability goals by 2030. In Switzerland, overexploitation of ecological resources and
social inequalities of opportunity dominate. The state, civil society and companies are called upon to make
their contribution to a safe and just life within the donut economy. This Master's thesis aims to find out which
incentives support producing SME+ in sustainable business management in order to profitably implement
ecological and social measures in the long term. The result is a four-step solution approach for SME+. The
current situation requires responsible, fast and effective actions from all actors.
