Alles was nicht
The ARC-Project (Autonomous River Cleanup) is an initiative led by students of the ETH Zurich to clean
rivers from plastic waste, in an international environment.
In the present work, the design and integration in an ISO container, of an autonomous, two-stage conveying
and sorting system was investigated, planned and carried out. The system is used to separate waste floating in
water from organic material.
The sorting plant consists of a disc sorter as the pre-sorting stage and the main sorting stage, which is
equipped with two articulated robots with image recognition. The pre-sorting stage is fed by a waste feed
conveyor system, which can either extract the sorted material directly from a river or obtain it from a
collection container (bunker). The pre-sorting stage is designed as a disc sorter and removes material that fits
through a grid with 50 x 50 mm edge length. Everything that has not been sorted out beforehand is placed on
the sorting conveyor system, is optically detected and the inorganic material is sorted out by the robots. The
sorted material is deposited in 2 to 4 different waste collection bins integrated in the container or external.
The organic material passes through the container and can be collected at the end or returned to the river.
The system can be used on boats anchored in rivers or on land and must be designed to withstand the stresses
and accelerations generated during transport and handling.
The prototype built as part of the project will be used from the third quarter of 2022 at the Letten run-of-river
power plant, on the Limmat in Zurich.
The control system for the test bench for compact ventilation units at the Institute of Building Technology and Energy is currently not working as intended. The goal of this thesis is to take the first step by looking at the control system of the first stage of the outdoor air cooler. A model of the heat exchanger is created with the help of which the control parameters for a PI-controller with gain scheduling are determined. At the same time a model of the system “Umweltsimulationskammer” is made, which is then finally used to test the determined control system.
This bachelor thesis deals with the further development of a mini-microscope for the Institute of Medical Engineering at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Horw. The prototype from a pre-vious project is characterized by its high mobility and low overall costs. The latter was achieved by using components from the consumer sector and the use of accessible technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting. However, the prototype still has design flaws, which need to be identified and rectified. In addi-tion, the revised mini-microscope should be publicly released as open hardware. After analyzing the prototype, all optimization options were compiled, prioritized, and transformed into a requirements list with concrete specifications. Through numerous functional tests, many partial solutions could already be validated in an early project phase. Among others, the use of a compliant mechanism or a combined coarse and fine drive, which was inspired by a high-precision actuator in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), was investigated.
The result is a mini-microscope with improved usability and many additional features. The already good image quality has also been enhanced by an optimized diffusing disk. The total cost of all the compo-nents used is around CHF 182. In addition, the assembly of the product has been simplified by the addi-tion of assembly instructions.
The demands on storage options for energies, especially in the thermal field, are becoming ever greater. One
possibility is the use of Phase Change Materials, also called PCM. These materials can store high thermal
energy by exploiting the phase transition. The competence center of the Lucerne University of Applied
Sciences and Arts in the field of thermal energy storage is interested in researching new materials. The aim is
to develop a material with high phase change enthalpy that is as cost-effective and cycle-stable as possible.
Cycle stability is ensured when a material still exhibits the same property after several solidification and
melting processes as it did at the beginning. For this reason, it is very important to have a well equipped
laboratory facility to perform such measurements.
The present work deals with the extension, optimization and development of two existing laboratory
equipment. More specifically, with the extension of a cycling apparatus with a heat flow sensor and the
revision of a drop calorimeter. These two equipments are considered important additions to the existing
laboratory facilities at HSLU.
For the cycling apparatus, thermodynamic simulations are used to determine an optimal positioning for a heat
flow sensor. These findings will be validated and evaluated in an experimental setup. After the successful
experiments, the apparatus will be redesigned and extended with the sensors as well as other design
adjustments.
For the drop calorimeter, the existing setup will be replaced by a new concept. This consists of a Dewar
vessel and an improved mechanism for sample insertion.
Due to time constraints, both developed setups could not be calibrated. In addition, the two concepts could
not be tested with PCM measurements and their results could not be compared and validated with the PCM
database.
This paper deals with the optimisation of a lake water plant by using thermal energy storage. In Switzerland, 20% of drinking water comes from lake water plants, where it is treated to drinking water quality. The lake water plant in Ipsach has reached the end of its service life after 50 years of operation and is now giving way to a new building. An important goal of the new lake water plant is to decarbonise the heat supply in the drinking water treatment process and the operation of the plant by using renewable energies. For this purpose, two cold water basins of the old lake water plant are to be converted into a seasonal thermal energy storage with a storage volume of 120 m3 by using the insulated sealing system (GEAS).
In this paper are the heat demand and the possible heat recovery of the new lake water plant summarised. Two scenarios can be defined from this information. The first scenario takes solar thermal energy into account as a heat source. The second scenario uses a heat pump, which is coupled to the planned PV system, as the heat source.
For both scenarios are annual simulations carried out with the integrated seasonal thermal energy storage. A simulation tool from the Competence Centre for Thermal Energy Storage at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is used for this purpose.
The simulations show that the advantages of the second scenario are greater due to energy from the PV system which also can be used for pumps in addition to the heat demand. In order to cover the heat demand, 0.3% of the total PV output is required for the provision of the heat. Furthermore, the usage of the heat pump can be optimised, so that the waste heat from emergency generators can be better utilised. 100% thermal self-sufficiency can only be achieved with a storage temperature of 95 °C. The useage of seasonal thermal energy storage is central to achieve the targeted degree of self-sufficiency.
This paper also shows the limitations of the simulation tool. By optimising it, the simulation results can be further improved. As a result, the simulation tool can make an important contribution to the design of the GEAS storage system.
The company Georg Fischer Machining Solutions AG has been dedicated to the task of improving the efficiency
of the cooling of high-precision spindles in machining tools. To this end, a high-performance coolant, based on
water and a phase change material was developed in collaboration with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences
and Arts. As a result of the phase change, more thermal energy can be absorbed or transported away compared to
conventional coolants.
Firstly, the aim of this work is to validate the existing experimental setup by water measurements. Furthermore,
the thermal behaviour and thermophysical properties of such high-performance coolants are to be investigated to
determine the optimum operating conditions. The measurements carried out are subsequently compared with
known correlations from the literature.
The results show that at an optimal inlet temperature, up to three times more heat can be absorbed than with water
and that the phase change dispersion heats up by less than 1 K in the process compared to water, which heats up
to nearly 3 K. The Nusselt numbers of the already existing correlation results in deviations of less than 15 %, which
also corresponds to the deviations of water.
Variable Rate Application Steuerung gesteuert.
This bachelor thesis documents the development of a concept solution for a mobile test
system. This can be used for statements about the spraying accuracy depending on the
speed of the spray train.
today's society it’s more and more important that public transport is cheap, reliable and
environmentally friendly. For a high reliability, maintenance and servicing of its own products
are an important factor for the company. The difficulty here is to find the right balance
between time pressure and quality. If processes or work steps can be made more
environmentally friendly, this increases the company’s reputation in society.
SBB has set itself the goal of completely eliminating glyphosate by 2025. SBB is currently
using glyphosate to control weeds in the track beds, which is part of the maintenance of the
Swiss rail network. To make this possible, they built the spray train that fights the weeds with
95°C hot water. The spraying mechanism is controlled by a control system with a variable
rate application. Unfortunately, the spraying accuracy is not satisfactory at higher speeds. As
a result, either the speed must be reduced or too much water has to be used.
This paper presents three possible combinations of a mobile test system for the spray train.
Following the study of possible options, a fourth possible combinations was drawn up in
cooperation with the person responsible at SBB. This formed the basis for the final solution
concept. As a conclusion, all open issues that are necessary for implementation were listed
and supplemented with a risk assessment.
herstellerspezifisch in Robotercode umschreibt.
In the robotics, the offline-programming is characterized by an application, that can be simulated and
developed on a computer to be uploaded to a real robot after completion. This is being realized with the
program RoboDK at the university in Horw, in which a number of robot cells with Stäubli-robots are based.
However, this interface, which is used for the conversion, does not work in all of the cases. The aim of this
project is, by an analysis with many different use-cases, to find out, how this interface exactly works and
which errors are occuring while using it. A suitable concept targets to solve those problems. The analysis
shows, that the interface consists of a conversion of the simulation program (in RoboDK) in a list of action of
the simulation, and a postprocessor, which rewrites the list manufacturer-specific in robot code. The
conversion in the list (which is not manipulable) shows problems, like the lack of important functions and the
omission of the logic of the simulation program. Furthermore, the postprocessor works with faulty functions
and can’t rewrite some important commands.
The developed concept, that aims to solve those problems, consists of an impoved version of the
postprocessor an a python-library. The incorrect functions in the postprocessor are remedied, an all missing
functions for specific commands are implemented. The python-library is being imported and used by the
developer already in the simulation program. The library supports the programing with many different
functions and communicates through the conversion with the postprocessor, to bypass the not manipulable
conversion in the list of actions. Different tests, with new use-cases, but also with a test-case with many
different students, show the functionality of this concept in practice. Only the conversion in the list of actions
cannot be improved completly and in rare cases, leads to some problems of the application.
The goal of the project Solar Butterfly is the development of a self-sufficient caravan, which can
supply itself with self-generated solar power and be operated autonomously. The Solar Butterfly
is intended to draw international attention and thus encourage and promote sustainable solutions
in the field of climate protection and electromobility. In collaboration with three other mechanical
engineering students and their bachelor thesis, the vision of the Solar Butterfly is to be turned
into reality.
This thesis deals with the definition of the requirements and design criteria of the Solar Butterfly,
the determination of design allowables, the elaboration of a specification sheet and the rough
dimensioning of the basic structure. A global FEM model is to be used to determine cutting
forces. Manual calculations and FEM simulations show that of the loads investigated, the load cases
of vertical and rotational acceleration, which occur while the vehicle is moving, represent the
greatest stresses. At the same time, these load cases show the greatest uncertainties and risks
due to boundary conditions which can only be estimated to a limited extent. It was also found
that the adhesive bond between the floor and the chassis is critical and that further investigations
and clarifications are necessary in this respect.
Furthermore, potential for weight reduction in the form of an optimization of the chassis in
conjunction with the floor was identified.
This bachelor thesis shows the development of a possible solution for spray arm control in a cleaning
plant. The project is being developed together with the company Belimed Life Science as an industrial
partner. The aim of this work is to develop a system that makes the rotational speed and direction of
spray arms in a cleaning plant controllable and adjustable. The plants for which the system is being
developed are mainly used for cleaning pharmaceutical equipment.
With the help of brainstorming and research work, possible solutions are clearly presented in various
morphological boxes. Through discussions with representatives of Belimed Life Science and a utility
analysis, the less suitable solutions are sorted out step by step. The final decision of the concept to be
developed is finally supported by preliminary tests in order to be able to assess the practicability from
the beginning.
The proposed solution for the existing problem consists of driving the spray arm with the help of a
water wheel. This is driven by the same water that is used for cleaning. This means that no additional
operating materials are required and the requirements regarding temperature and water resistance
can be met. The speed of the water wheel and thus of the spray arm can be infinitely adjusted via
proportional flow control valves. By arranging the water nozzles for the drive water in different ways,
the speed can be reversed during operation.
The developed concept is tested for its functions and suitability with the help of a functional model.
Due to time constraints, the corresponding test report is not available in this paper. However, it will
be submitted later and attached as a separate document.
This bachelor thesis deals with the "variable-rate application" and its use on the tracks. The industry partner is the SBB. The open source project AgOpenGPS was analysed and evaluated for them. The thesis delves into the analysis of the software that contains the "variable-rate application". It will be worked out whether the software can be used and where there is potential for improvement. In order to do this systematically, we work with solution concepts and in different phases. The solution concepts range between "reprogramming the software yourself" and "using the software unchanged". In the first phase, the software is assessed unchanged. In the second phase, the source code is analysed. As a result of the findings from phases one and two, SBB is recommended to write its own software. In the third phase, the loading of a map is analysed in more detail to gain further insights for the own software. At the end, there is an outlook for the future with further insights.
