Verbesserungen.
The objective of the present work is to collect and analyze fluid mechanical quantities that can
influence the drag characteristics of a Hyperloop Pod depending on the deployment and operational
parameters from an aerodynamic point of view. Based on an existing pod geometry, the relationships
between the pod envelope, the ambient pressure, the speed and the dimensions of the transport
tube are determined using CFD simulations. The information gained will be used to design a new pod
envelope in collaboration with the Swissloop association, which originated from a student initiative at
ETHZ. Taking into account the specifications from the Swissloop project, the envelope is to be further
optimized using 3-D CFD.
The parameter study concludes that the drag characteristics of a pod are significantly influenced by
its cross-sectional area in relation to the cross-sectional area of the empty transport tube. Depending
on the travel speeds, supersonic velocities are generated as the pod flows around it, which introduce
further drag-increasing phenomena. For a hyperloop application, this problem is further exacerbated
due to lowered ambient pressures.
For the Swissloop pod, a significant reduction in required propulsion power and maximum crosssectional
area was achieved. The reduction of the resistance characteristic has thus been successful,
but still leaves room for improvement with a constant high drag coefficient.
This project deals with the characterization of the adsorption behaviour of three substance pairings
using their adsorption isotherms. The goal is to contribute to the quantification of the matrix borne
carry over of VOCs in sorptionwheels. This is necessary to enable the use of sorption wheels in
critical applications with high requirements for air purity. The isotherms should be determined as part
of an experimental investigation using the sorption analyzer MixSorb L®. The three substance
pairings are Isopropanol/AP4-60, Toluene/H-MOR and Toluene/H-FAU.
With the substance pairing IPA/AP4-60 six measurements in three different concentration ranges
were conducted. Using the results of the experimental investigation an adsorption isotherm at a
temperature of 30°C could be determined. Based on the isotherm the amount of matrix born carry
over of isopropanol in a sorption wheel coated with AP4-60 could be approximated.
With the substance pairing TOL/H-MOR three measurements in two different concentration ranges
were conducted. Due to the questionable behaviour of the results, no isotherme to characterize the
adsorption behaviour could be determined. Because of time constraints no measurements were
conducted with the substance pairing TOL/H-FAU and no isotherme could be determined either.
Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand im Rahmen des Moduls Bachelorthesis an der Hochschule Luzern - Technik
& Architektur.
Phasenwechselmaterial.
The following paper was written in the scope of the module 'Bachelorthesis' at the Lucerne University of
Applied Sciences and Arts. It deals with the thermodynamic dimensioning of double-walled drinking glasses
that provide a cooling effect. Furthermore, the construction of a prototype to automatically fill the glasses
with a phase-change material (PCM) is discussed. The PCM is filled into the cavity of the glasses. After
charging the glasses, it cools the drink inside it, by using the phase change from solid to liquid. In this paper,
a model was developed, which calculates the Temperature of the drink while cooling down. Since this is a
highly complex and transient problem, the developed model can only be used for qualitive analysis. To
provide quantitative results, a more detailed view of the system is required.
In the second part of the paper, the development, implementation and functional validation of the devised
prototype. The challenge consisted of the fact, that the handblown glasses vary from one another slightly and
therefore the position of the hole to fill the glasses with the PCM and the filling capacity is not constant. This
requires a system, that can detect the position of the hole and the required amount of PCM to fill the glass and
can react properly. Image detection is used to localize the position of the filling hole and the filling capacity
is detected with a light barrier, which is mounted at the height of the desired filling height. The prototype was
designed to be able to fill the new products of the company, which are currently under development, as well.
The built prototype works reliable and can automatically fill the glasses with the PCM after the press of a
button.
Currently, Switzerland is facing fundamental changes in its energy markets due to economic and technological
developments as well as political decisions at home and abroad. Of the approximately 60 terawatt hours of
electricity consumed annually in Switzerland, around 18 terawatt hours are consumed by private households (status
as of 2011) [1]. Thus, there is a widespread interest in the electrical consumption of buildings. For example, it
is of great interest to understand what purposes electricity is used for in order to set priorities for reducing its
consumption.
The total yearly electrical energy demand of buildings is currently predominately used for accounting purposes.
Thus, big data sets are potentially available. Within this thesis, two data sets for residential buildings in two
Swiss municipalities were analysed. The age-related segmentations of the buildings in the data sets were discovered
and visualized with bar graphs. In addition, the electrical energy demands were analysed and visualized with box
plots.
Additionally, the specific electrical energy demands with respect to energy reference areas were calculated and
visualized with empirical cumulative distribution functions. Furthermore, a new approach was used to divide
the distributions of the overall specific electrical energy demands into shares for appliances, space heating and
domestic hot water production. The outcomes obtained by using this method were compared with values from
existing surveys concerning the electricity consumption in typical households as well as with standard values for
domestic hot water demand. The comparison showed that the extracted heat demands tend to be too low. However,
the new approach seems promising in terms to extract different shares from the total yearly specific electrical energy
demand for buildings from big data sets. Further developments, based on this work, in terms of a comprehensive
analytical methods are required.
It is important to note that an improvement of the reliability of the method or an extension of the methods requires
additional data sources.
empirischen kumulativen Verteilungsfunktionen visualisiert.
The goal of the project Solar Butterfly is the development of a self-sufficient caravan, which can
supply itself with self-generated solar power and be operated autonomously. The Solar Butterfly
is intended to draw international attention and thus encourage and promote sustainable solutions
in the field of climate protection and electromobility. In collaboration with three other mechanical
engineering students and their bachelor thesis, the vision of the Solar Butterfly is to be turned
into reality.
This thesis deals with the definition of the requirements and design criteria of the Solar Butterfly,
the determination of design allowables, the elaboration of a specification sheet and the rough
dimensioning of the basic structure. A global FEM model is to be used to determine cutting
forces. Manual calculations and FEM simulations show that of the loads investigated, the load cases
of vertical and rotational acceleration, which occur while the vehicle is moving, represent the
greatest stresses. At the same time, these load cases show the greatest uncertainties and risks
due to boundary conditions which can only be estimated to a limited extent. It was also found
that the adhesive bond between the floor and the chassis is critical and that further investigations
and clarifications are necessary in this respect.
Furthermore, potential for weight reduction in the form of an optimization of the chassis in
conjunction with the floor was identified.
erreichen.
On small-scale, closed system such as a habitat in outer space, the complete sustainability inside the system is
highly sought after. Some microalgae have the ability to harness the light and use the CO 2 from inside the
habitat to photo-synthetically produce oxygen and take up liquid human waste. This work documents the
details of the construction of a ten-liter flat-plate bioreactor system that has been designed for experiments at
the laboratory scale. The system consists of one cultivating vessel, a dedicated sensor chamber. The algal
medium is continuously pumped out of the vessel to the sensor chamber, before routed back into the main
tank via a diaphragm pump. The sensor chamber is fitted with probes that measures pH, dissolved oxygen,
temperature (in main tank and the sensor chamber), the optical density of the medium and the chlorophyll
fluorescence. The reactor is modular and sterilizable. Based on the current reactor design, the operation of the
system should enhance growth rate and biomass concentration of microalgae cells with low power inputs
creating a carbon negative process.
Verbesserungspotenzial gibt.
The investigation of the melting and solidification behaviour of phase change materials (PCMs) plays
a significant role in the research of thermal energy storage (TES). At the Lucerne University of
Applied Sci-ences and Arts, the X-ray computed tomography (CT) is used, among other methods, to
examine a PCM during its solidification and melting processes. With the CT instrument, it is possible
to represent the PCM sample in a digital 3D reconstruction, allowing for the determination of air
inclusions or the orientation of formed crystals, for example.
The problem addressed in this work is that the interior of the CT has a temperature of 20°C, and
therefore, the PCM always tends to reach its state at 20°C. While insulation can slow down this
process, it cannot stop it. For instance, if one wants to investigate the PCM sodium acetate trihydrate
(SAT) with a melting point of 58°C, it can be heated outside the CT to a temperature above 58°C
until it is melted. However, once the heat supply is stopped, and the SAT sample is placed in the CT,
it will inevitably adjust to 20°C and solidify again. To prevent this and actively transfer heat to or
from the sample, a CT temperature control device is being developed within the scope of this work to
address the described issue.
During the development process, one of the most important questions is how to realize heat
generation and cooling provision. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of various
possibilities, the decision is made to use Peltier-elements. Two different Peltier-elements are being
used: a 118 W Peltier-element with excellent cooling performance but a maximum operating
temperature of 100°C, and a 204 W Peltier-element that proves to be more suitable for heating
processes. The 204 W Peltier-element also has a maximum operating temperature of 160°C. Due to
these temperature ranges, two devices are constructed: one for the temperature range of -30 to
100°C utilizing the 118 W Peltier-elements, and another for heating operations up to 160°C using the
204 W Peltier-elements. To evaluate the limits, capabilities, and performance of the devices during a CT examination, several
tests are conducted. The test experiments demonstrate that the devices work and make it possible to
melt and solidify PCM samples in the range of -30 to 160°C. The maximum cooling power provided
by both Peltier-elements at a device temperature of -30°C amounts to 36 W. The heating power is
significantly higher as it constitutes a majority of the electrical power. The maximum heating power
achieved during the tests is approximately 240 W. The test experiments also show that the cooling
performance improves when heat can be dissipated more effectively at the "hot" side of the Peltier
element. Depending on the temperature, the measurements can take up to 2 hours. A long
measurement time is not necessarily a disadvantage, as a slow phase change progression is
advantageous for obtaining qualitative and high-contrast CT reconstruc-tions.
In order to precisely control the phase change of the PCMs and investigate them accordingly, it would
be ideal to regulate the Peltier elements to the temperature of the PCM. However, this proves to be
one of the greatest challenges throughout the work because there is a temporal temperature
difference within the device between the temperature near the Peltier-elements and the temperature
of the PCM. When attempting to regulate the Peltier-elements to the temperature of the device near
the sample, the regulation starts to oscillate significantly, leading to undershooting and overshooting.
Satisfactorily adjusting the regulation is not possible. Unfortunately, this issue cannot be resolved in
this present work, highlighting areas for potential improvement.
Alles was nicht
The ARC-Project (Autonomous River Cleanup) is an initiative led by students of the ETH Zurich to clean
rivers from plastic waste, in an international environment.
In the present work, the design and integration in an ISO container, of an autonomous, two-stage conveying
and sorting system was investigated, planned and carried out. The system is used to separate waste floating in
water from organic material.
The sorting plant consists of a disc sorter as the pre-sorting stage and the main sorting stage, which is
equipped with two articulated robots with image recognition. The pre-sorting stage is fed by a waste feed
conveyor system, which can either extract the sorted material directly from a river or obtain it from a
collection container (bunker). The pre-sorting stage is designed as a disc sorter and removes material that fits
through a grid with 50 x 50 mm edge length. Everything that has not been sorted out beforehand is placed on
the sorting conveyor system, is optically detected and the inorganic material is sorted out by the robots. The
sorted material is deposited in 2 to 4 different waste collection bins integrated in the container or external.
The organic material passes through the container and can be collected at the end or returned to the river.
The system can be used on boats anchored in rivers or on land and must be designed to withstand the stresses
and accelerations generated during transport and handling.
The prototype built as part of the project will be used from the third quarter of 2022 at the Letten run-of-river
power plant, on the Limmat in Zurich.
For the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts - Technology and Architecture, an
automatic machine for making crêpes was developed. This crêpe robot was to be used at
exhibitions and tours of the university as well as partners of the project, to give visitors and
interested parties a culinary understanding of the various possibilities with a robot.
There are concepts from earlier works, which process the step of filling the crêpes. For the
filling chocolate and jam are possible. In this work the optimal solution for the integration of
the concepts into the crêpe robot should be worked out. The focus should be on a uniform
system, for jam and chocolate, as well as cleanliness and compactness.
The filling is ejected in a cylinder with a piston. The movement is performed by a stepper motor
and a telescopic thread. Thus, the space can be better utilized. At the bottom, the output is
controlled by duckbill valves, which also serve as an anti-drippling system. This ensures that
the system is as clean as possible.
The dosage process is controlled by Microcontroller, which is connected to the limit switches,
stepper motor drivers, push buttons and LEDs by a specially manufactured printed circuit board.
The dosage can be started by a signal input or by manually pressing the button. Limiting the
extension and retraction is limited by two limit switches. The energy supply is enabled by three
spring contacts and one step-down converter. The signal transmission from the program of the
crêpe robot to the dosing unit goes via a voltage divider to the Microcontroller.
For the chocolate, a heater is required in front of the nozzle. This is implemented by an
aluminium insert with two heating heads of 40 watts each. The necessary power is controlled
by the Microcontroller through a Mosfet directly with 24V.
To prevent the nozzles from forming drops due to their own weight at the maximum filling
quantity of 1.5 litres of jam, a rotating closure was designed.
In
Due to the current political and technological developments on the global energy markets, Switzerland
is facing changes. Of the 229 terawatt hours of energy consumed annually in Switzerland, 61
terawatt hours are accounted for by households [1]. A large part of this consumption is attributable
to applications that are functioning according to the principle of thermodynamic cycles. Specifically,
these are heat pumps and refrigerators. The number of heat pumps is likely to increase soon,
as heat pumps are increasingly being used for air conditioning in buildings. It is in the interest of
manufacturers and consumers that these machines are operated as efficiently as possible. To make
this feasible, the individual components must first be examined and then optimised. One such component
in a refrigerator is the expansion device. In this thesis, a capillary tube is considered which
is used as an expansion device. Two physical simulation models were developed with the modelling
language Modelica. One model is a zero-dimensional correlation model, which does not calculate
the states physically, but with parameters determined from empirical data. The second model is
a one-dimensional finite-volume model. In this model, the conservation of mass, momentum and
energy is established and equations are solved for each control volume. Both models were validated
with empirical data from literature. There are some points to consider when using the models.
Only R600a (isobutane) can be used as working medium. Further the one-dimensional model calculates
all flows as non-choked flows. The heat flows over the outer wall are also neglected. For a
successful implementation into a refrigeration system, these points should be further investigated
and considered in the model.
Testreihe “Effects Of Canopy Geometry On The Drag Coefficient Of A Cross Parachute In The Fully Open
And Reefed Conditions For A W/L Ratio of 0.264” von W.P. Ludtke.
The objective of this thesis is to develop a simple, reusable and save recovery system in the form of a reefed
parachute for the self-constructed rockets of the student association ARIS. Therefore the requirements of IREC
regarding the descent rate must be met. Special focus was set on the development and manufacture of a
cruciform parachute with integrated skirt-reefing.
A reefed parachute combines the properties of a drogue parachute with those of a main parachute. That is to
say that only one parachute can realize two different constant descent rates.
In this thesis a concept study was made and the best assessed solution was enhanced. It was shown, how a
cruciform parachute with skirt-reefing was dimensioned, manufactured and tested. The determination of the
drag coefficient 𝐶𝐷 for the open and reefed parachute were emphasized.
This thesis was based on the “Parachute Recovery System Design Manual” by T.W. Knacke and on the
technical report “Effects Of Canopy Geometry On The Drag Coefficient Of A Cross Parachute In The Fully
Open And Reefed Conditions For A W/L Ratio of 0.264” by W.P. Ludtke.
A 𝐶𝐷of 0.57 in the open stage was determined by the conducted drop test out of 60 meters and a 𝐶𝐷 of 0.109
in the reefed stage was extracted by the translational drive test. With these performance values a touchdown
velocity of 8.5 m/s and a constant descent rate in the first stage of 19.44 m/s can be reached.
The required descent rate of IREC is in between 23 m/s and 45 m/s during the first stage and the touchdown
velocity must be less than 9 m/s. Thereby only one of both main requirements was met. To satisfy both
requirements the dimensioning of the canopy must be optimized and tested again.
