The present work deals with rammed earth as a building technique that
has a great potential in designing the new depot for open-air museum
Ballenberg. The site planning concept of the museum supports having
several buildings of different typologies in the site of the new depot.
The functions of the depot are divided into many buildings according
to an intensive research of the relationship between the construction
and the architectural space in each.
The research was based on studying two contemporary rammed earth
buildings and their building processes and case studies of possibilile
building structures.
The contrasts that the buildings display, emphasize the specific relationship
between the construction and the space as a representative of
the function. However, the storage buildings are combined through
the material that saves their valuable contents.

The wood as a building material developed through history by
adapting to different constructions. The swiss farming houses
are a distinguished example of wood construction. Their roofs in
particular were always considered to be something noteworthy.
Swiss houses influenced the modern wooden architecture in the
beginning of 20th century, as seen in the work of Konrad Wachsmann.
While the farming houses are analyzed so we can better understand
the typology and construction of roofs, an investigation of
Wachsmann’s work brings further information on how recent
technological development changed wood construction.
The aim is to propose a project for a new depot building for the
Ballenberg museum. My approach to solve this task is by
bringing together the information gathered from the analyzes of
swiss farming houses and the work of Konrad Wachsmann.
Through references and the project proposal, this paper
explains the reasons as to why timber returned as a relevant
building material and how new technology can transform the
traditional swiss structures, delivering an architecture that
relates to both tradition and the latest technical innovations.
This thesis work considers an outlook on classical modernity in
village formation, space, structure and apparance in the frame of
reference of Charlottenhof by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The architectural
image presented on the Swiss rural way of life and chalet
has been the symbol of national identity since the National Exhibition
1896 in Geneva. The writing of Stanilaus Von Moos in Nicht
Disneyland 2015 opened a discourse of the question of Swiss identity
and architectural image. He presented the term 'classical modernity'
as the advanced way to proceed beyond the architectural image
of the Swiss chalet. An 18th century architect name Karl Friedrich
Schinkel was proclaim as future man of architecture due to his
influence in transformation of Classical architecture with modernity.
With the focus on the idea of classical modernity, could the
new collection depot provide one possibility of an architectural
image in an advance way as Von Moos proclaimed? With the background
on Schinkel and his project in Charlottenhof, Potsdam, four
architectural strategies such as village formation, space, structure
and appearance from four different projects within the Swiss
context relating to the new collection depot were analysed. Theoritical
background on Schinkel and classical modernity will be based
on a collection of essays in Karl Friedrich Schinkel: Drama of
Architecture 1995. The outcome of the strategies were adopted into
the project in relation to the analysis outcome from Charlottenhof.
The analysis in relation to classical modernity from Charlottenhof
give one possibility of advancing a new 'style' in relation to the
farmhouse vernacular.
Inspired by the traditional Swiss farm houses and in
particular the existing relation between the stud and log construction
in wood, this master thesis work pays attention to the correlation
of this observation with the themes of building program and
distribution of light, which are initially brought within the construction.
In a region of outstanding traditional houses it has been
seen as a good opportunity to suggest existing but forgotten building
typology of a storehouse which can be further developed
with the notion of important for the Modern time questions.
By bringing local examples of farm houses, storage houses
of Switzerland and Japan, together with the modern beliefs of the
architect Louis Kahn, this paper gathers knowledge which
supports the idea of combining traditional construction principles
with modern ideas of creating atmosphere in architecture.
In applying concept of light for a place where light is not
supposed to be, the project underlines the ambivalent character of
the word “Schaudepot” and introduces a possible solution for the
new exhibiting warehouse in Ballenberg.
