In cooperation with the Institute for Electrical Engineering at the Lucerne University of Applied
Sciences and Arts, a small and widely useable battery-operated microcontroller board with an
integrated LoRa-transceiver has been developed. LoRa is an RF modulation technology that enables
communication over long distances, requiring only a small amount of energy. This can be used to
gain valuable data with battery-operated devices in remote areas and send them via LoRa on the
network. The aim of this project is to develop a fully functional board, which is able to send and
receive LoRa-signals. Therefore, suitable components were evaluated, which have been built on the
designed PCB. The already existing software stack was ported to the used microcontroller
architecture, which has not been supported up until now. The goal is that the two boards should be
able to communicate with each other.
Using circuit traces, coils can be created in PCBs. From them, PCB linear motors can be created that
can move small vehicles with magnets. The whole thing can be used for playful purposes, like a race
track.
The aim of the present work was to be able to move the vehicle as quickly and reliably as possible on
the race track. In order to achieve this, it was possible to build on an HSLU-internal preliminary
project. In addition, the creation of the racetrack was to be automated with the help of scripts.
The focus of the work was the physics of the racetrack. A suitable method was developed for
measuring the force of the racetrack: The vehicle was loaded with weights until it came to a
standstill and thus the maximum payload was determined. Existing racetracks were compared with
each other to find the optimum. For this purpose, different PCB thicknesses, different coil circuits and
layers, magnet numbers and sizes, supply voltages and coil currents were measured.
From the results of these measurements, own test tracks and a motor driver were developed.
The created test track can move twice the payload compared to the reference track.
A simple coil track can be generated with the scripting API in KiCAD.
To compare the motor force, the payload was used as a criteria in this work. The test tracks are
designed as straight lines.
In a next step, a race track with curves can be created to measure the speeds of the vehicles. In
addition, the script for automating the coils can be extended so that a complete race track can be
generated automatically.
kompletten Beispielimplementierung des Konzepts «Firmware update over the air» in einem
In the scope of this thesis, a demonstrator infrastructure was developed as a proof-of-concept, which
can demonstrate the process of a firmware update over the air in a LoRaWAN network to several
nodes simultaneously. Besides a self-developed hardware, which simulates the nodes in the field and
a FirmwareOverTheAirUpdate-server (FUOTA), a protocol was developed that allows to send firmware
patches in parallel to a group of nodes using predefined specifications of the LoRa-Alliance. A
specially developed bootloader can then merge these patches with the current firmware to create a
new firmware version. The final version of the developed demonstrator includes a FUOTA server,
LoRaWAN network server, gateway and a LoRaWAN node. The demonstrator is one of the first
complete example implementations of the concept of firmware update over the air in a LoRaWAN
network and can serve as a basis for future developments and research.
Image processing applications with machine learning and neural networks are very computationally intensive
and consume a lot of energy and bandwidth when the data is transferred to a central server.
New ARM Cortex M7 microcontrollers are capable of running these demanding applications. The open
source image processing framework OpenMV is available for the STM32H7 controllers from
STMicroelectronics. Microcontroller-based image processing enables small, energy-saving edge computing
devices. Since image processing is performed "on-the-edge" directly in the controller, no sensitive data is
transmitted. This leads to less privacy concerns and bandwidth advantages.
The new microcontroller family i.MX RT by NXP with ARM Cortex M7 Core allows clock frequencies up to
1GHz. To evaluate the i.MX RT controllers OpenMV was ported. Performance and power measurements
were performed, the complex memory architecture was analyzed and comparisons were made to OpenMV on
the STM32H7. Since OpenMV is based on MicroPython, it was ported to the i.MX RT family using the NXP
SDK. The software was developed in a Linux environment with VisualStudio code and GCC compiler. For
the development platform (Seeed-Arch-Mix Board with i.MX RT1052) a PCB was designed to connect
various hardware extensions (cameras, LCD, servos and extension headers).
A complete OpenMV port for the i.MX RT1052 was created. Different cameras are supported, even thermal
images can be evaluated with a FLIR lepton camera. OpenMV on the i.MX RT1052 consumes 0.5W and has
a performance comparable to the STM32H7. The speed of OpenMV on the i.MX RT1052 is negatively
affected by the external connection of the flash memory, as the L1 caches of the i.MX RT1052 are not
sufficient to buffer the flash accesses in this application. The developed hardware and software enable a
comprehensive OpenMV platform based on the i.MX RT1052 and can be used as an alternative to
STM32H7-OpenMV for further work.
The market has seen a rise in products with power profiling functionality, which makes it easy to
debug and optimize power usage of low-power devices.
This thesis analyzed the available solutions on the market, evaluating their features, identifying
unmet needs and missing functionality.
The key finding was that most profiling solutions that link execution state to power measurement do
so using Single Wire Output (SWO). SWO is not available on all Arm microcontroller architectures,
particularly the Cortex-M0(+), commonly used in low power applications.
To address this gap, a proof of concept was developed implementing elementary power profiling,
linking the code's execution state to a power measurement. The solution utilizes the Debug Access
Port (DAP) available on all Cortex-M cores and is accessed over the standard Single Wire Debug
(SWD) link. This means that the solution should be compatible with any system implementing a
Cortex-M core, debug functionality through SWD, and an accessible power input.
Position. Die Position wird auf einem Speicher geloggt. Parallel werden Live-Positionen an das LoRaWAN
Netzwerk von The Things Network übertragen.
The goal of this project was to develop an evaluation model of a datalogger used for sailing regattas on the
Lake Lucerne. The customer for this project is the Institute for Electrical Engineering of HSLU. Two hardware
versions were built and tested. The datalogger can be configured with a configuration software prior to an
operation. After a start up sequence the datalogger will automatically try to acquire a position with the help
of a GPS module. The datalogger will safe its positions onto a local storage device. The datalogger will also
forward its live positions to the LoRa WAN network of The Things Network. All received live positions will be
forwarded via a webhook. The receiving website displays the positions as dots on a map. The configuration
software can also be used to download logfiles from a datalogger. All files will be saved Excel sheet and as
GPX file.
This project work presents a functional data logger that uses a GPS connection to record accurate
position data, stores it locally and sends the data via LoRaWAN to a web server where it is displayed
on a website. The data logger was developed for a sailing club and its regattas, but can also be used
for other competitions or for commercial purposes. As only the locally stored data provides the
precise positions, the organiser can download this data after the competition using configuration
software and make any changes to the data logger. The organiser is also informed about battery
voltage, signal strength and housing openings of the individual data loggers. This is done via the
same website where co-trackers can track the locations of their competitors. All hardware and
software documentation for the project is publicly available on the Gitlab platform.
überall her gesteuert werden.
In this thesis, a microcontroller circuit and the associated software is developed, which makes it
possible to integrate a non-smart office floor lamp into the Philips Hue automation system. The
documentation describes how the solution concept was developed, followed by a detailed description
of the developed hardware and software. The result of this work is a functional prototype, which is
attached to the light stand and plugged in between the power supply of the light and the light itself.
This makes it possible to integrate the floor lamp into the Philips Hue system like an original Philips
Hue product. Thanks to the prototype, the floor lamp can be controlled from anywhere using the
Philips Hue app. If the floor lamp is switched on or off by the existing remote control, the state of the
floor lamp is also updated in the Hue app. The question of whether you really switched off the office
floor lamp is a thing of the past, as this can be easily checked on your smartphone and executed
accordingly.
Radio communication systems are becoming more and more popular and are used in a wide variety of
applications. This thesis deals with a modular and easily expandable radio communication system that is
intended to serve as a development platform for software and hardware developers. The complete system
consists of a radio remote control, the associated receiver and a ground control station. The focus of this work
is on the radio receiver, which has to be adapted to the already existing subsystems, consisting of the radio
remote control and the ground control station. A real-time operating system runs on the embedded system of
the receiver. The up- and downlink radio data is processed by various tasks in order to achieve a bidirectional
communication. Based on the communication via its own protocol, the receiver hardware is controlled with
the data received via radio. The existing system will be modified so that the receiver can be controlled over a
remote control emulator from the ground control station as well. The complete radio communication system
was finally adapted to a specific end system, a commercial off-the-shelf model airplane. The usage goals
were validated in a ground- and flight-test.
Stillstand kommt.
The Academic Motorsport Club Zurich (AMZ) was founded in 2006 by students of the ETH. Together with
the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Lucerne, ETH builds new race cars every year to participate
in the largest international engineering competition, Formula Student. Due to the ongoing Covid-19
pandemic, last year's race car called alvier was optimized to compete in the events this summer. The main
focus is on reliability and weight reduction.
This paper describes the implementation and commissioning of the different work packages within the
electrical engineering. Together with the steering wheel, the dashboard is the most important interface
between the driver and the vehicle. Via LEDs and the screen installed in the cockpit, the driver receives
important information about the status of the vehicle. For the first time, a flexible PCB is used for the steering
wheel, which has made it possible to minimize the number of cables inside it. The buttons on the steering
wheel can be used to activate the Drag Reduction System (DRS) and Push to Talk (PTT), and to navigate
through the menu. Driver radio and telemetry are used to exchange information between the vehicle and the
base station. The newly designed Pedalbox PCB has been adapted to current needs and is essential for driving
and steering the race car. The Brake System Plausibility Device (BSPD) ensures that the race car comes to a
stop in the event of a malfunction.
aktuellen Stand jedes Arbeitspaketes eingegangen.
This bachelor thesis describes the construction of the racing car alvier, which is designed for the Formula
Student project of the Academic Motorsport Club Zurich (AMZ). The thesis describes the production and
commissioning of an LV battery and the corresponding LV supply PCB. In addition, the TSAL Driver system
is described and the adaptation of this PCB to the four-wheel drive is described. Furthermore, this thesis deals
with the different electrical systems of the HV battery. Among them are the commissioning of a new HV
PCB and the adaptation of this PCB to make it compliant. The production and commissioning of a new fan
supply PCB is also shown. To protect the system-critical signals, both the EMC concept and the grounding
concept are explained and shown how they are implemented in the race car. The production and
implementation of the work packages mentioned is explained in detail in this paper and the problems
encountered and the current status of each work package are discussed.
In the Formula Student project of the Academic Motorsport Club Zurich (AMZ), the 15th racing car
called bernina is being designed and built. For the first time, the vehicle is being developed so that it
can be used purely autonomously or with a driver. The challenge is to integrate both functions into
one vehicle.
In this paper, the implementation of the individual work packages of the electrical engineering is
described, whereby the concepts were previously developed in the industrial project. For the wiring
harness and the EMB (Energy Meter Box), the production and subsequent installation in the vehicle is
described. In order to increase the reliability, the grounding and EMC concepts of aliver were taken
over and adapted to the new components. The shutdown circuit is integrated in the wiring harness
and is taken into account during production and installation of the wiring harness. For the FDE
(spring damper elements) PCB, the production of the PCB and the subsequent commissioning are
described. In addition, further system tests of various components in the vehicle are documented.
