This thesis book combines the thesis project with the semester topic of “Lugano – Città in Transition”
and sheds light on the resulting subtopic:
STORYBOARD LUGANO
A staged sequence of urban images as
a strategy for maintaining the identity of the city
Holding its complexity, the city blends into the distinctive topography of Lugano. Meandering paths in
the city surprise the visitors with sudden views and esplanades. And these are the factors that form the
stage for the urban population. The idea of continuing Lugano’s urban platform on the Piazza
exPestalozzi area is the starting point of this work. Gordon Cullen’s theories – Townscape, The
Vocabulary of the City – and Sergei Eisenstein’s essay “montage and architecture” play a pioneering
role. At the heart of the work, there is a question of how the urban identity can be continued through a
staged sequence of old and new urban images.
Sketched on site, the storyboard combines urban elements in different scales and connects new and
old aspects of the city. Also, it portrays the perspective of the protagonists, Paul and Maria. Paul sees
the future of the Piazza exPestalozzi area as a traveler and Maria as an inhabitant of the city tower.
Over the last century our homes have evolved towards two distinct types of dwelling: the house and the
apartment. The choice of dwellings is usually tied to the choice of area and not to the bare choice of typology.
This means that often we do not choose whether we want to live in a house or in an apartment. Contemporary
apartments have evolved to become very different from houses and it seems that often a lot of the qualities
have been lost.
If we think of qualities of apartments such as having a comfortable outdoor area, having an apartment that
allows different gradients of intimacy or simply having an apartment over two floors, we realize that a lot of
those qualities are those that are true to houses. In a way the more an apartment resembles a house, the more
qualities it has.
The aim of this work is to analyze the characteristics of a house and to apply them to apartment, with the
intention of creating dwelling qualities. Through the investigation of four aspects of the house – the entrance,
the organization of the rooms, the verticality and the connection to the outdoors space, principles will be
deduced and applied to the design project of an apartment.
