Verbesserungen.
The objective of the present work is to collect and analyze fluid mechanical quantities that can
influence the drag characteristics of a Hyperloop Pod depending on the deployment and operational
parameters from an aerodynamic point of view. Based on an existing pod geometry, the relationships
between the pod envelope, the ambient pressure, the speed and the dimensions of the transport
tube are determined using CFD simulations. The information gained will be used to design a new pod
envelope in collaboration with the Swissloop association, which originated from a student initiative at
ETHZ. Taking into account the specifications from the Swissloop project, the envelope is to be further
optimized using 3-D CFD.
The parameter study concludes that the drag characteristics of a pod are significantly influenced by
its cross-sectional area in relation to the cross-sectional area of the empty transport tube. Depending
on the travel speeds, supersonic velocities are generated as the pod flows around it, which introduce
further drag-increasing phenomena. For a hyperloop application, this problem is further exacerbated
due to lowered ambient pressures.
For the Swissloop pod, a significant reduction in required propulsion power and maximum crosssectional
area was achieved. The reduction of the resistance characteristic has thus been successful,
but still leaves room for improvement with a constant high drag coefficient.
This work deals with the acoustic recognition of activities in a household with the aim of enabling the
activation of assistive technologies in smart homes. The focus was on developing algorithmic foundations for
the acoustic recognition of "Activities of Daily Living" (ADL), which describe defined activities that enable
independent living. The goal was to research algorithmic approaches for the acoustic recognition of ADL and
to develop and validate reliable algorithms for two specific ADLs. As a result of the work, algorithms were
developed for ADLs related to toileting and personal hygiene. For the acoustic recognition of toileting, the
sound of flushing was chosen as characteristic, and for personal hygiene, the sound of the shower was
chosen. Since both sound sources involve location-based activities that are performed by all individuals in a
comparable context, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were trained as the algorithmic approach for
detection.

The wood as a building material developed through history by
adapting to different constructions. The swiss farming houses
are a distinguished example of wood construction. Their roofs in
particular were always considered to be something noteworthy.
Swiss houses influenced the modern wooden architecture in the
beginning of 20th century, as seen in the work of Konrad Wachsmann.
While the farming houses are analyzed so we can better understand
the typology and construction of roofs, an investigation of
Wachsmann’s work brings further information on how recent
technological development changed wood construction.
The aim is to propose a project for a new depot building for the
Ballenberg museum. My approach to solve this task is by
bringing together the information gathered from the analyzes of
swiss farming houses and the work of Konrad Wachsmann.
Through references and the project proposal, this paper
explains the reasons as to why timber returned as a relevant
building material and how new technology can transform the
traditional swiss structures, delivering an architecture that
relates to both tradition and the latest technical innovations.
