A new wheelchair-accessible footbridge and cycle path bridge is to be designed over the SBB track on the
Oberstockenweg in St. Gallen and dimensioned at the preliminary project stage. The project is located to the
west of the St. Gallen-Bruggen railway station and has to become part of the Veloschnellroute in future
which has been developed in the St. Gallen-Gübensee agglomeration programme. A ramp connecting the
Lehnstrasse with the Stationsstrasse and a staircase connecting the Oberstockenweg are to adjoin the bridge
on the north side. The aim is to design a low-maintenance bridge that fits perfectly into its surroundings and
will continue to enhance its value in the future.
The variant study includes two variants. The first one consists of a steel bridge with an upper half-timbered
structure, whereby the railing of the ramp is designed as a load-bearing half-timbered structure. The second
variant consists of a steel bridge with a railing and a hollow box at the bottom. After the variant study, variant
2 will be further processed and dimensioned on preliminary project level. During the dimensioning, the box
girder as well as the force transfer point into the wall section are examined. The other elements of the
passerelle won’t be dimensioned.
The steel hollow box with varying static height consists in longitudinal direction of an upper and lower chord,
of standing longitudinal plates, as well as of diagonal and cheek plates. The latter act as the outermost
elements of the box girder. In the transverse direction, the bridge is braced by regularly arranged transverse
plates. The box girder bridge is clamped to the north by a massive reinforced concrete wall with high rigidity
while the south will be resting on an abutment. The result is a modern bridge that will continue to integrate
optimally into its surroundings in the future.
