This thesis book combines the thesis project with the semester topic of “Lugano – Città in Transition”
and sheds light on the resulting subtopic:
STORYBOARD LUGANO
A staged sequence of urban images as
a strategy for maintaining the identity of the city
Holding its complexity, the city blends into the distinctive topography of Lugano. Meandering paths in
the city surprise the visitors with sudden views and esplanades. And these are the factors that form the
stage for the urban population. The idea of continuing Lugano’s urban platform on the Piazza
exPestalozzi area is the starting point of this work. Gordon Cullen’s theories – Townscape, The
Vocabulary of the City – and Sergei Eisenstein’s essay “montage and architecture” play a pioneering
role. At the heart of the work, there is a question of how the urban identity can be continued through a
staged sequence of old and new urban images.
Sketched on site, the storyboard combines urban elements in different scales and connects new and
old aspects of the city. Also, it portrays the perspective of the protagonists, Paul and Maria. Paul sees
the future of the Piazza exPestalozzi area as a traveler and Maria as an inhabitant of the city tower.
