The increasing production of variable renewable energies necessitates the integration of compact thermal
storage systems. A popular option with a small footprint and high capacity are latent heat storage systems.
Their high volume-specific heat capacity comes from the utilization of phase change materials (PCMs) as the
storage material. There are several designs for latent heat storage systems, such as direct contact [1], heat
exchanger [2] or (macro-) encapsulated PCM [3], etc. When operating the latter, a suitable capsule geometry
is critical for the performance of the storage system.
In this study, the influence of the capsule geometry on the pressure drop is investigated by analytical,
numerical and experimental methods. The aim is to find a numerical method with which the pressure drop
can be determined over different packed-bed configurations. For this purpose, two packed-bed configurations
consisting of cylinders with different height-to-diameter ratios, h/d = 1 and h/d = 2.5, were created. For
numerical simulations, the fixed beds were digitised by CT scans with the CT system d2 from Diondo.
Additionally, fixed beds with identical parameters were created in the 3D graphic suite Blender.
First, the pressure gradient was calculated using the Ergun equation. For the flow simulation, the three
programmes VGSTUDIO, GeoDict and coupledNumerics were used. VGSTUDIO and GeoDict only require
an STL file as geometry input. For the simulation in coupledNumerics, a mesh must first be created. For the
mesh generation, the mesh generator snappyHexMesh, which is included in OpenFOAM, was used.
Experiments were carried out to validate the results of the Ergun equation and the flow simulations. The
experimental setup created for this purpose is designed in such a way that packed beds with different heights
can be used for experiments and measured on the CT system.
The comparison shows a discrepancy between the results of the Ergun equation and the experiment. The
results of VGSTUDIO and GeoDict show that a different solver must be used to get representative results.
CoupledNumerics provides the most plausible results of all numerical methods. However, the mesh
generation should be optimised.
This work shows that a simulation of the flow through a packed bed presents great difficulties due to the
complex geometry. For future work, the use of coupledNumerics should be pursued.
