The design project “the white elephant” focuses on the Sbrinz cheese warehouse in the west of the
city of Lucerne that belongs to Emmi corporation. In the present thesis book, the theoretical aspect of
the design task is addressed. An analysis of the site leads to the question of the present role of
production in the urban space. Do we need a renaissance of urban production? What value added
can urban production generate in urban areas?
In order to make a statement about the above questions, the correlation between producing and living
is explored. In a second step, anthropologic action and urban spaces are examined. Subsequently,
the two subject areas are interlinked. From the overlay and special proximity of production and living
spaces conjunctions arise, which are defined as productive spaces. The divergent utilisations create
an increased tolerance in urban spaces and a transparency regarding their utilisations. Synergies and
interdependencies emerge on different levels and ultimately create value added for living, producing,
and for the acting human in urban spaces.
A renaissance of urban production is imperative not exclusively from an economic or ecological
viewpoint, but also emergent from the trends in urban construction.
